Gumdrop Flower Candle Holders
Author: Dédé Wilson
Makes: Makes 12
Ingredients
- ½ cup sugar
- Aluminum foil
- 12 large (1¼-inch across the bottom) gumdrops
- 12 small (3/4-inch across the bottom) gumdrops
- Bamboo or metal skewer
Instructions
- Place the sugar in a small bowl; set aside. Put a small piece (about 6 by 6-inches) of aluminum foil on work surface and place large gumdrop on top. Place another piece of aluminum foil on top, and using your palm to press, flatten out the gumdrop. It should now be a flat disc about 2-inches across. Dip the flattened gumdrop in the sugar to reduce stickiness. Use small knife to make 6 cuts equally spaced all the way around the circle going in about ½-inch from edge (this creates the petals). Dip your fingertips in the sugar, grab each petal and give it a slight twist while also smoothing and rounding out the edges (see photo). Repeat with small gumdrops. “Flowers” can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 month. To assemble, place small gumdrops on top of large gumdrops to create a 3-dimensional flower. Use a skewer to make a hole down through the center of both. Place flowers on cake and then insert the candles through pre-made hole and down into cake.
