rice paper

rice paper [rahys pey-per] noun

Also known as edible rice paper or wafer paper. Paper made from edible starch, (often potato starch, despite the name) used frequently in confectionery as an edible cake top, to line pans for nougat or to make edible paper flowers. Designs can be drawn or painted with edible colors on top of the wafer, which is then placed on top of the cake. The moisture in the frosting dissolves the wafer, leaving the design in place. These are not the same as icing sheets, which are used with actual printers to create edible photos and designs.
