Julie's Original 1

Product Description: The Julie in the product name is Julie Hasson and she has a line of “Deliciously Gluten Free” mixes including this Brownie Mix as well as a White Cake Mix. This review is for the Brownie Mix.

Ingredient List: Sugar, brown rice flour, Dutch-processed cocoa powder (processed with alkali), potato starch, tapioca starch, baking soda, sea salt and xanthan gum.

Test Kitchen Overview: Love the minimal packaging, which is a brown paper bag and label. Was pleasantly surprised to find an airtight sealed inner package as well. The directions are simple: combine brownie mix with milk of choice (I used Silk Organic Unsweetened Soymilk), oil and vanilla extract. By preparing it with soy, rice or almond milk it is dairy-free and it is also naturally egg-free as well. How to blend the ingredients together was less clear (see below under Cons). The batter was thick and glossy, just as described and looked promising. The recommended baking time is 40 to 45 minutes but ours were ready at 30 to 35 minutes, so check early.

Pros: Very easy to make and you can prepare the batter in the time it takes to preheat the oven. Requires an 8-inch square pan, which will likely be in your cupboard. Very rich, chocolaty flavor, luscious dark color, moist texture.

Cons: Slightly gummy texture, although this could be from overbeating the batter or perhaps my choice of milk. The directions say, “Beat well until smooth, about 15 seconds” but she does not specify whether this is beating by hand or mixer. In fact in the beginning of the recipe it suggests that you can use either, but the time spent beating would be very different. I would try it again next time by beating just until the ingredients come together.

Suggested Use: This is a great, basic, dark chocolaty brownie that I recommend for those looking for gluten-free options. The chocolate flavor was really rich and delicious and the color was invitingly dark. Julie recommends trying them with the addition of chocolate chips, but we liked the basic brownie so much I think if we added anything it would be nuts. These are packed with chocolate flavor as is!
