Black Forest torte [blak fawr-ist, for– tore-t] noun
Also known in Germany as Schwarzwälderkirschtorte or elsewhere as Black Forest cherry torte. A complex cake comprised of many layers and components, typically chocolate cake, cherries, kirsch (fruit brandy), cream or buttercream, sometimes ganache and often chocolate shavings. Although some versions leave out the alcohol, it is considered a must in Germany. Cherries can be sweet or sour.
